Why We Do What We Do

~ Janet S. ~

"December 27th 2021 was life changing for my husband and I. I awoke that morning looking forward to spending the day celebrating the Christmas season with my husband’s family. Soon after getting up and finding him already downstairs, I instinctively realized that something wasn’t quite right with him. My husband was experiencing what I would later learn was a significant stroke. Fast forward…….. after time in ICU at Vancouver General, over a month in Delta Hospital and significant weeks in Rehabilitation in Surrey my husband was released into my care.

I cannot describe how fearful and unprepared I felt. My husband was not the same person, I had absolutely no idea how I was going to cope with our new reality. A neighbour happened to mention Delta Stroke Recovery and I managed to register him. From walking into the very first meeting with my husband, I instantly felt that we were in the right place. He feels valued and appreciated as a member and looks forward to attending weekly.  Other members are friendly and welcoming, sharing a common bond they are respectful and kind. Most of all the staff and volunteers are so caring, always smiling and happy to see us. As a result of his stroke, my husband suffers from Aphasia.

The hour or more of group speech therapy that he receives whilst attending the group has been beyond helpful, promoting his speech, verbal expression and confidence in social settings. Over time, many valuable resources have been exchanged between staff and participants. We have received so much helpful and important information.
We also love the social events where I can be included too.

Delta Stroke Recovery Group will continually have our support.  I cannot praise this valuable community resource enough."
